Historic ranch makes over $3 million at auction
An Oklahoma ranch has fetched $3.125 million in an auction.
Twin Ranches, which was sold Friday, had belonged to the estate of Warren Wilbur, the son of Avery Miller, who amassed his fortune in lead and zinc mining around the Ottawa County town of Picher. The buyer’s name was not disclosed.
“It was the biggest auction I have ever been a part of in my 21 years as an auctioneer,” auctioneer Harold Post said. During the auction, he called the ranch “the showplace of Ottawa County.”
Warren Wilbur died in December 2002, and his wife, Alleen Wilbur, died Feb. 18. His stepdaughter, Jan Kimbrough of Joplin, Mo., said the ranch was being sold in the family’s best interest.
The 1,861 acres of land contained two houses, including a 3,500-square-foot home built in 1895 about seven miles from Commerce. The land had originally been divided into 13 separate tracts, which sold for a cumulative $2.6 million. However, the auction also called for a chance for buyers to purchase the land in one piece.
