Hurstville Cinema for auction

PUBLISHED 7 June 2007

A CINEMA that was owned by the same family for 40 years will be auctioned on June 19.

Beverly Hills Cinema on King Georges Road will be sold with adjoining properties that included three shops, a former Pizza Hut restaurant and a vacant block of land.

The owners, Jim and Jane Tsagias have decided to retire and sell the 2800-square-metre site. Parking was a major concern in 2003 when the cinema development plan included 212 parking spaces.

But a literal interpretation of Hurstville council’s parking codes required 367 spaces, a matter that had residents concerned about over-development.

The council excused the cinema from extra spaces because there was already parking in nearby streets.

Zoned for general commercial use, the cinema has been DA approved for a new entertainment facility with a potential for another three screens.

Malcolm Gunning, of Gunning Commercial, said the re-development should incorporate the cinema because the area was a popular shopping strip.
