Maryland – 400 Acres Of Undeveloped Waterfront Land
An historic, pristine waterfront tract along the St. Martin’s River and Assawoman Bay made up of three parcels totaling more than 400 acres will finally come up for auction tomorrow after years of dispute about its ownership.
The property’s former owner, the late John G. Townsend, a former governor of Delaware at the turn of the last century and a two-term U.S. Senator from the First State, deeded the property to three area churches in the 1960s with the understanding the farmers working on the land would be allowed to continue to do so for as long as they lived.
The last of the farmers working the historic tract passed away last January, converting full ownership rights back to the three area churches holding the deeds on the property- St. Paul’s by the Sea in Ocean City, the Zion Church in Bishopville, and the Salem Church in Selbyville. The three churches will collectively auction the land to the highest bidder tomorrow afternoon.
The combined 412-acre tract is divided into three major parcels and will be auctioned off as one piece by the Marshall Auction-Marketing Company, Inc. of Salisbury tomorrow afternoon at precisely 2:18 p.m.
“The interest in this property has been phenomenal,†Doug Marshall, Jr., who will conduct the sale tomorrow afternoon, said. “We’ve had inquiries from U.S. Ambassadors and from as far away as the Ukraine and Russia. We’ve had people call interested in doing a water park and we’ve had a call from Six Flags. We’ve also heard from several people interested in doing a golf course on the property. There’s a strong dossier of potential buyers from all over the East Coast.â€
