A seven and a half acre tract of land on the west side of Athlone set a new record price of just over €5 million at auction last week - in a sale that amounted to an incredible €670,000 an acre.

The land - at the junction of the N61 Roscommon road and the slip road leading onto the Athlone bypass opposite Ganly’s Hardware - was bought in trust for a record €5,000,025 for a consortium of local businessmen who already own an adjoining 60 acre site.
